About Town of Tsnori

Legend has it that the name of the town comes from the tsnori tree, around 25-30 m in height. Indeed, forests surround the town which was first mentioned in the 1580 historical annals of Alexander II, King of Kakheti, as his hunting ground. However, traces of settlements in this area go even further back in the Alazani Valley, where Georgian archaeologists discovered a monumental, luxurious tomb in 1974.

Among the objects found inside the Tsnori tomb, the golden figure of a lion, which dates back to the second half of the 3rd millennium AD, is of great importance. Researchers believe that this object is an outstanding miniature sculpture, with no known analogue from the same period.

Today, the population of Tsnori is mostly engaged in viticulture and animal farming.

Just 4 km away from Tsnori is the beautiful historical town of Sighnaghi, a tourist heartland with a variety of attractions and wineries. From here, at a distance of about 8 km, there is the unique Bodbe Monastery Complex (5th century AD).
