Bakhmaro is special among Georgian ski resorts due to several factors, including its geographical location. Sitting amid the Meskheti Range, it is just 50 kilometers from the Black Sea. Even among Georgia’s highland regions known for their thick and long-lasting snow cover, Bakhmaro stands out for its heavy snowfall and exceptional snow quality, due to its proximity to the sea. Indeed, in winter, the snow cover consistently reaches 4–5 meters, creating ideal conditions for freeriding.

The resort is surrounded by dense pine and fir forests, which act as a natural protective barrier, helping to preserve the snow cover and shielding the resort from strong winds. These forests play an important part in creating favorable conditions for freeriding and are one of the main reasons Bakhmaro’s winter season is particularly long and stable. Typically, skiing on untouched snowy routes here is possible for longer than at other resorts. Moreover, beyond their practical benefits, the snow-covered forests also add to the aesthetic element, attracting visitors not  interested in sports but who are instead drawn to the stunning natural landscapes.

And while this might seem like a significant drawback for a winter resort today, it has made Bakhmaro Georgia’s most intriguing winter destination, for certain types of visitor at least. Skiers who go here do not seek conventionality, but rather adventures — they like having to sculpt their own routes through the snow rather than sticking to organized ski runs. Ski touring — ascending slopes with specialized equipment and then descending on untouched snow — has become one of the main attractions in Bakhmaro. 

The diverse terrain at the resort allows skiers of all levels of experience to enjoy themselves. Beginner freeriders have access to lower-altitude and less steep slopes, while experienced skiers can choose from a wide range of more challenging descents.

One of the most popular spots here is Mount Gadrekili, with a demanding ascent to the summit and a challenging descent particularly favored among experienced skiers. Elsewhere, the surrounding area has numerous exciting routes too, from relatively safe trails to almost completely wild terrain. For example, the slopes of Mount Sakornia are known for their long descents, while the inner slopes of the Bakhmaro basin are ideal for those who enjoy short but intense runs.

Safety Rules and Standards at Bakhmaro

Due to its largely wild natural environment, adhering to safety rules standards is a top priority in Bakhmaro. The resort carries a significant risk of avalanches, especially after heavy snowfall. When planning a tour, keep in mind that Bakhmaro’s high-altitude location and climatic conditions can also pose certain challenges. An experienced guide, who ensures that all skiers follow the safety protocol and are properly equipped, must accompany every tour.

In addition to standard gear, the required equipment includes avalanche safety tools such as a beacon, a probe, and a shovel. It is also important to have thermal clothing and spare gear. While there is a local rescue service ready to assist during emergencies, every visitor should take preventive measures and strictly adhere to safety guidelines to minimize risks.

For instance, monitoring the weather forecast and assessing the avalanche risk level before every outing is crucial. Group skiing rules must be followed — members should maintain visual contact with each other and keep a safe distance. It’s also advisable to have alternative reliable communication devices, as mobile networks may not be available in the more remote areas.

How to Get to Bakhmaro

Reaching Bakhmaro in winter can be challenging, so plan your route in advance and double-check the weather and road conditions before departing.

Bakhmaro is about 350 kilometers from central Tbilisi, 130 kilometers from Batumi, and 120 kilometers from Kutaisi. The nearest town is Chokhatauri, which is approximately 52 kilometers from Bakhmaro. Reaching Chokhatauri is relatively easy, as the routes run along the main highways. However, the Chokhatauri-Bakhmaro section can be more complicated. Despite being paved and carefully maintained, this section is often covered in heavy snow during winter, necessitating at least a high-clearance vehicle for safe travel. You should also keep in mind that weather conditions can significantly increase travel time.

If heading to Chokhatauri via public transport, you can then rent a snowmobile or snowcat to reach Bakhmaro. Although this service is relatively expensive, it’s the safest means of transportation if you don’t have a vehicle of your own. Importantly, plan the journey during daylight hours, as traveling at night here brings with it additional risks.
