You can take the trail starting from either Juta Village in the Kazbegi Municipality or Roshka Village in the Dusheti Municipality.
June and July are the best months to undertake this hike, as conditions for hiking and camping are at their best.
The trail’s starting point is Juta Village, 2,100 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest inhabited places in Europe.
In Juta the trail starts with a paved road and heads toward Chiukhi Mountain. The trail is moderate difficulty: at one point you have to wade through the river and ascend a few steep slopes. After nine kilometres and approximately three hours you will reach Chiukhi Pass.
On the other side of the pass, you will see the White, Blue and Green lakes of Abudelauri, to which you will descend before setting up camp for the night.
You’ll wake in the magical mists that shroud the shores of the lakes. After breakfast, you will have a choice between two possible paths back to Roshka.
If you head towards Arkhoti Pass, you will come to the Roshka Rocks, two of which are on the list of the world’s largest glacial erratics.
The second path takes you straight back to Roshka Village, where you can stay in a family hotel or get on the road to your next destination.
