The theatre was built in 1987 with the participation of the local populace. “This theatre grew before my very eyes. Beautiful shows were put on here, on a stage with water fountains instead of curtains. It was an amazing sight to see.” More than a few of the native Lechkhumians will tell you similar things, and they are all true.
Since its founding, the theatre has hosted a variety of events, festivals, and gala concerts, and while it did fall into disuse for a time, it was restored between 2015 and 2017.
Open porches, walking paths, decorated retaining walls, and outdoor lighting were all added during this renovation, meaning that there is now space for 800 audience members.
In the summer the ornamental garden of the unique Green Theatre fills up with audience members, and a variety of shows are put on for both visitors and locals alike.
