Where Is Buba Glacier Located?

On the slopes of Buba Peak on the Racha Caucasus range in Oni Municipality, you will find the complex Buba Glacier. Buba Glacier covers an area of 1.5 square kilometres and measures 2.7 kilometres in length. Its snow line stands at 3,350 metres above sea level, and the glacier itself acts as a source of water for the Chanchakhi River’s right tributary and the Bubistskali River.

Until 1990, the Vakhushti Bagrationi Geographic Institute was conducting multi-year station studies on the glacier. The aim of the studies was to study the glacio-geomorphological and glacio-hydro-climatic situation of the glacier.

How Do You Get to the Glacier?

Now there is a great hiking trail, starting from the resort Shovi, connected to the glacier, which allows travellers to find areas of beautiful wilderness. This is a 13 km long, moderately difficult, out-and-back trail, requiring 7 hours to complete.
