Tkhopra Canyon is in Tsachkhuru village in the region of Samegrelo, Martvili Municipality.
The route starts in Tsachkhura village, 730 meters above sea level. There are 9 cascading waterfalls with the highest being 55 meters tall. The waterfalls are only five to ten meters walk away from each other. It is necessary to use climbing ropes to go canyoning.
Unlike other canyons, the water flow is lower in Tkhopra Canyon, so you can go canyoning even when it is rainy. The canyon is made of limestone layers, so you might come across animal and plant “fossils” which pique the interest of geology lovers.
The route takes about 3-4 hours to complete.
Summertime is ideal to go canyoning when the average temperature is 30 to 35 degrees Celcius.
It’s 30 kilometers along a paved road from the center of Martvili town to Tsachkhuru. At the end of the road, there is a 2.5-kilometer walking path where Tsachkhuru Monastery lies. When the weather is good, you can see beautiful views of Samegrelo Region and sometimes even the coastline of the Black Sea.
The instructors will provide proper descending techniques. You will descend along a route that you learn in advance. You’ll be easily able to control the speed of your descent.
Make sure to wear closed-toed sports shoes. A wetsuit, helmet, and rock-climbing harness will be provided for you.
Contact the tour organizers beforehand to make a booking and you can pay in cash at the site.
