Where is Jortskhu Cave Located?

Jortskhu Cave is located in the village of Balda in Martvili municipality.

You can reach the village using any motor vehicle, but after the paved road ends, you’ll need to cover the 5 km distance to the cave by motorbike, bicycle, or on foot.

What Will You See Inside Jortskhu Cave?

The length of the cave is about 200 meters, which can be covered in two hours. The cave is horizontal, making it somewhat easier to move through it.

The cave contains some peculiar fauna and paleontological species. In the past, it was used as a shelter by people, with bones of bears, lynx, European bison, and other animals found at different times.

The cave is full of stalactites, stalagmites, columns, travertine surfaces, and rock clay layers. The cave is also rich in layers of plastic clay as thick as 3.5-4 meters.

The average air temperature inside is 14 degrees.

After exiting the cave, you can visit the beautiful Onyore Waterfall, located about 1 km away.

Things to Consider

Before starting the route, be sure to check you are equipped accordingly. Have a helmet, flashlight, rubber boots, and comfortable clothes (for example, overalls) with you. It is necessary to bring along drinking water as well.
