Tianeti is a mountainous region located 1,000-3,000 meters above sea level. Head north from Gldani, one of the largest districts in the capital of Tbilisi, and go uphill.
There are other roads towards Tianeti, one from Jhinvali, Saguramo, Kakheti, and the other from Gldani. The road from Gldani is the most beautiful as it passes through 8 kilometers of Sabaduri forest, which is spectacular any season of the year with its beech, oak, and linden trees.
Enter Ghulelebi village and the long, beautiful Ertso alley. Once you go up the hill you will see Sioni lake and in a couple of minutes, you are surrounded by mountains.
Once you arrive in Tianeti city center and take a walk in the Kujana garden, take a minute to speak with some locals who will happily give you advice on what to see.
In the city center, there is a local museum, where archeological materials discovered in the area are on display.
There are around 100 medieval churches and fortresses surrounding Tianeti. One of the most famous is Bochorma church, Bodoji castle, and Jaleti church; only one village of Nadokra has 5 historic monuments, including the King Archil monastery from the VIII century.
On the east of Tianeti, heading towards Kakheti, you will see Kveteri fortified city from the X-XI century.
To enjoy picturesque, preserved nature you need to travel north from Tianeti and follow the Iveri river valley where there are multiple camping spots.
The 11 tributaries of the river Iveri create beautiful ravines and are the cleanest among the large rivers of Georgia. The forests have a plethora of mushrooms and berries. Swim and enjoy fishing in this river.
The last village to the north of Tianeti is Ghorgha, between the Mtatusheti area and Khevsureti.
When traveling to Tianeti, try Tianeti Khinkali and Dambalkhacho, real treasures of Georgian cuisine. The fermented cheese with a distinguished flavor has a special preparation technique, which is almost two centuries old, and will blow your tastebuds out of the water.
