Ushguli community is located in Mestia municipality, at 2,200 meters above sea level, at the base of the Shkhara Peak, near the sources of the Enguri River. This is one of the highest inhabited settlements in Europe.
Ushguli and surrounding villages are some of the oldest settlements in Svaneti, full of traditional Svan towers, including those in the village of Chazhashi, which is on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Monuments.
Ushguli is 42 kilometers away from Mestia, the administrative center of Svaneti, and experiences long and rather severe winters.
Gvibari mountain is in the main watershed range of the Caucasus Mountains, south of the village of Murkmeli, 3,050 meters above sea level.
The route starts in Murkmeli and passes through Queen Tamar’s summer residence on its way toward Gvibari Mountain. The elevation to climb is 990 meters. The route ends in Murkmeli again.
In addition to having an experienced guide, it is also important that you have a complete set of equipment, including special skis, an avalanche kit, a transmitter, spade, probe, and other necessary items.
You will need to be in good shape for ski tours. If necessary, local specialists will design a program to suit your needs.
