The history of Shkhepi Fortress begins with the founding of the ancient Georgian kingdom of Egrisi (also known as Lazica), which existed on the Back Sea coast from the 1st to the 8th centuries CE. The earliest construction layer of the fortress itself dates back to the beginning of the 4th century.

Shkhepi Fortress is located near the city of Senaki, and the path leading to it is simple enough, so that even inexperienced hikers can make the trip. From the fortress, you will have a panoramic view of Senaki and its surroundings.

The Historical Past of Shkhepi Fortress

Shkhepi Fortress was an important structure and served as the home residence for the Dadiani family dynasty for some time. The Dadianis ruled Samegrelo from the middle of the 12th century until the 19th century.

There is a painting of Shkhepi Fortress which was done by the European traveler Frédéric DuBois de Montperreux. He traveled around Georgia from 1832 to 1834.

The fortress has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times. The monument is itself divided into four construction layers. Based on the construction techniques, Shkhepi Fortress was in use from the 6th to the 18th century.
