The backcountry route starts in Tskhumari Village, at 1,300 meters above sea level. You then head into the forest, where you will steadily gain 1,000 meters in elevation. Afterward, switch to the ridge, and your guide will select an appropriate path to continue on depending on the skiers’ capabilities.
Every way will take you to the highest point at 3,000 meters and from there, you’ll start your descent, with a total vertical drop of 1,700 meters.
The ski routes are mostly on the northeast slope where snow on Laila Ridge sticks for a longer time.
Make sure you have the proper equipment such as touring skis, a sleeping bag, an avalanche transmitter, a shovel, an avalanche probe, and other essential items. Hotels and guesthouses are available in Mestia city and Tskhumari villages and remember that it is mandatory to hire a qualified ski guide.
