Batumi Beach is a must-visit spot (and, let’s be honest, often the main attraction point) when you're in Georgia’s standout coastal city. Thankfully, getting there from any part of the city is quick and simple: it shouldn’t take you more than 20 minutes by public transport, bicycle, or even on foot, regardless of what area you’re staying. The main stretch of Batumi Beach extends for about 7 kilometers, so there’s plenty of space for swimming, sunbathing, and various water activities.

The beach itself is primarily pebbled. While it creates a unique feel and certainly sets Batumi apart on tourist map, the pebbles can quickly turn from a refreshing change to annoyance to outright discomfort. With that in mind, always bring beach shoes or at least flip-flops with thick soles, to keep your feet protected.

The summer months from July to mid-September, when the weather is at its warmest and precipitation is at the lowest, is officially the peak season in Batumi. During this period, the beach is always full of life all around the clock, with multiple vendors selling tasty treats, cold drinks, and ice cream and water sports operators offering their services at every other corner. It’s a perfect time to properly enjoy the bustling atmosphere of Georgia’s Black Sea coast. However, this seasonal popularity brings with it higher prices for accommodation and services (including for sunloungers, umbrellas, and chilled drinks) so budget accordingly.

If a quieter experience is more your speed, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (mid-April to mid-June) and fall (late September to late October). Here in the Adjara region, the weather is still pleasant during these times, although the chances of an occasional rainstorm do increase. The beach is far less crowded during these seasons, and perfect for those who prefer to relax. However, keep in mind that some amenities and services might be limited during these times. In particular, the further you are from peak season, the scarcer water sports operators will be.

The water quality at Batumi Beach is generally considered high, with temperatures ranging from a cool but swimmable 14°C in early spring, to a pleasant 27-28°C at the height of summer, to a still comfortable 21°C in October.

If you don’t have your own umbrella, don’t worry - it’s usually possible to rent one along with a sunlounge. The heat can get intense after midday, making it less comfortable to lounge even in the shade. Whether sunbathing or swimming, be cautious about spending too long under the sun, and of course, like Baz Luhrmann once said, wear sunscreen. 

Beach bars and cafes are scattered all along the coastline, serving refreshing drinks and snacks throughout the day. Stopping by one of these establishments gives you a pleasant break from the sun and a chance to enjoy the local vibe and the sea from afar and in a cooler temperature. However, be mindful of the prices. Naturally, cafes and bars closest to the sea tend to be much pricier than those further inland, so bear that in mind when picking where to eat and drink.

For disabled visitors, accessibility can be somewhat limited on Batumi Beach, although improvements are being made every year. Currently, there are a couple of beaches with accessible infrastructure, including adapted walkway, shower and changing room, as well as floating wheelchairs. The Old Boulevard was first constructed at the end of the 19th century and is brimming with historic charm, lush greenery, and beautiful fountains. Somewhat confusingly, you’ll also find some of the most recognizable later attractions of Batumi city, including the Ferris Wheel, where you can take a memorable ride to enjoy stunning views over the Black Sea coast, the city skyline, and the stunning mountainous backdrop.

Near the Ferris Wheel, you’ll find the Ali & Nino Statue, a moving metal sculpture depicting a giant man and woman slowly passing through each other. The statue takes its name from the widely-acclaimed Kurban Said novel telling the poignant love story of a Georgian girl and an Azerbaijani boy during the early 20th century.

Nearby, you’ll find the 130-meter-tall Alphabetic Tower. The structure’s unique design celebrates the Georgian script, showcasing all 33 letters of the national alphabet, winding around the tower in a DNA-like double-helix pattern. 

Another must-visit part of Batumi Boulevard is Europe Square, where after 9pm the Dancing Fountains a colorful show involving lights, music, and high jets of water.

The New Boulevard section has a more contemporary flair with modern sculptures and artistic installations. This area is perfect for cycling and rollerblading, with its scenic paths surrounded by trees, bushes, and lawns. New Boulevard is known as the heart of Batumi nightlife and entertainment. To enjoy a comfortable day at any beach you need to pack the essentials, and Batumi is no different. 

Don’t forget sunscreen, towels, and a light cover-up if you aren’t able to shower on the spot after your swim. Additionally, bring thick-soled flip-flops or beach shoes to comfortably walk around pebbled beach, a hat, and sunglasses.

It's also advisable to carry some cash as certain vendors won’t accept card payment. Try to carry smaller denominations in local currency (i.e. 5 and 10 GEL) as getting change from larger notes might be difficult. But avoid carrying large number of bills as that might make you a target.

To stay safe all across Batumi, especially during peak season, always keep an eye on your belongings as petty theft has been known, especially in crowded areas. If you’re in a group, designate one person to stay with your valuables while others go for a swim and swap watches with each other.
