Location

Mestia is built on the banks of the Mestiachala and Mulkhuri rivers, 1,500 meters above sea level. The area is surrounded by forests and peaks and on the northeast side, where you can see Banguriani ridge. 

Mestia is the administrative center of Svaneti Region and is distinguished by a plenty of natural and cultural sites. A ropeway, one kilometer from Mestia center, gets you to Hatsvali skiing areas. Enjoy walking tours, picnics, and other activities in Hatsvali during the summer season. From the top of Hatsvali, enjoy some of the best views of Svaneti. 

Route

The route starts in Mestia, 1,500 meters above sea level. Pass through the forest and toward the mountain in the north. After walking up 800 meters, the alpine zone begins and the route continues to the north towards the lakes. After walking along the lakes, reach rocky slopes, 3,400 meters above sea level. 

Descend to the 6-kilometer Chalaati glacier, south of the main ridge of the Svaneti part of the Caucasus Mountains. The Mestiachala River originates at its foot. The route leads to the Chalaati bridge, and from here, travel 7 kilometers to the Mestia center. 

When skiing along the route, a certified guide must accompany you since skiing on the glacier requires expert knowledge and additional safety equipment.

Things to consider

Use an off-road vehicle to get from the end-point back to Mestia. 

In addition to hiring an experienced guide, it is important to have the right equipment, including, ski touring skis, an avalanche bag, a transmitter, a shovel, a probe, and other necessities.

Good physical training is also required before completing this route. If you need prior training, get in shape with local trainers two weeks before the tour.

Stay the night at a hotel in Mestia. The ticket system applies to all mountain-skiing resorts in Georgia and you can use one multi-day ticket in Goderdzi, Mestia, Gudauri, and Bakuriani ropeways.
