Mestia town is located in Svaneti Region, on the banks of the Mestiachala and Mulkhura rivers, 1,500 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by forested ridges and peaks and is towered by the Banguriani Range to the northeast.
Hatsvali is a popular ski location that active vacation lovers flock to for its amazing views, the opportunity for night skiing and skiing in the forest, good infrastructure and a large variety of accommodations nearby.
Mestia is the administrative center of Svaneti with many cultural and recreational areas. There are lovely museums, cafes and panoramic spots in the town.
Route
This out-and-back route starts nearby Mestia, 1,500 meters up, and heads north through a forest towards a mountain, locally called Jvari. The Koruldi Lakes are 2,750 meters high with amazing views of Ushba Peak, Banguriani, Tetnuldi, and others. After skiing down through the alpine zone, you can continue on to the forest massif up to the center of Mestia.
What to Keep in Mind
In addition to hiring an experienced guide, it is important to have the right equipment, including, ski touring skis, an avalanche bag, a transmitter, a shovel, a probe, and other necessities.
You can only book hotels in Mestia as there are none outside of the town and remember that it is mandatory to hire a qualified ski guide.
